The Hebrew word of the week is shoftim (judges, magistrates), a Qal participle that is derived from the root shafat (to judge, govern). Shoftim is the keyword of Parashat Shoftim, and occurs as the first word in Deuteronomy 16:18:

You shall appoint judges and officers in all your towns (Deut 16:18)
