Hebrew Word of the Week
Based on Weekly Torah Portion
The Hebrew word of the week is azan (listen, give ear, harken), which appears in the Hiphal imperfect (1mp) as the keyword of Parashat Ha'azinu:
Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak, and let the earth hear the words of my mouth. (Deut 32:1)
Azan occurs primarily in poetic books, mostly in the imperative. It's closest parallel is to the Hebrew verb shama'. In the Hebraic mindset, the ear (ozen) represents obedience.
Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speakin your ears this day (Deut. 5:1b)
Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive tothe voice of my supplications. (Psalm 130:2)
