Hebrew Word of the Week

Based on Weekly Torah Portion

Chayei Sarah

The Hebrew word of the week is chayim (life), a plural noun (construed as singular) that comes from the verb chayah, which means to live or revive.  Chayei Sarah means "the life of Sarah," a construct form that appears twice in the parashah of the same name:

Gen. 23:1 (BHS)

And Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah. (Gen. 23:1)
