Words of the Parashah - Bo

Hebrew Word of the Week

Based on Weekly Torah Portion

The Hebrew word of the week is bo (בּוֹא), meaning to "go in," or "enter," though more idiomatically the verb can mean "to die" (i.e., go to the fathers) or for sexual relations (come in to her). Bo is the fourth most occuring verb in the Tanakh. The verb first occurs in Genesis 6:13, "And God said unto Noah, 'The end of all flesh is come (בָּא) before me,'" and the kal imperative singular form of the verb ("you go!") occurs in the first verse of Parashat Bo (פרשת בא):

Exodus 10:1 (BHS)

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart
and the heart of his servants, that I may show these signs of mine among them" (Exodus 10:1)
