The midrash notes that the word <em><a href=\"https:\/\/hebrew4christians.com\/Holidays\/Fall_Holidays\/Elul\/elul.html\">Elul<\/a> <\/em>(\u05d0\u05b6\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc), when read backward, spells <em>lulei<\/em> (\u05dc\u05d5\u05bc\u05dc\u05b5\u05d0), meaning \u201cif not\u201d or \u201cwere it not for&#8230;\u201d, which suggests that the <a href=\"https:\/\/hebrew4christians.com\/Holidays\/Fall_Holidays\/Elul\/elul.html\">last month of the Jewish year<\/a> serves as a season to examine ourselves, to confess our sins, and to resolve to more completely turn toward the Divine Presence before the new year&#8230; Indeed the gematria (i.e., letter value) of the name Elul (1+30+6+30) is the same as the Hebrew word <em>binah<\/em> (\u05d1\u05bc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b8\u05d4), \u201cunderstanding,\u201d or the ability to discern <em>between<\/em> (\u05d1\u05bc\u05b5\u05d9\u05df) truth and error.
