As he promised: \u201cI tell you the solemn truth, the one who hears my message and believes in the One who sent me has (i.e., present active indicative) eternal life and will not be condemned, but has passed over (literally, \u201ccrossed over\u201d) from death to life\u201d (John 5:24). \u00a0Note that the verb translated \u201chas passed over\u201d is \u201cperfect active\u201d that expresses completed action: \u201cthis one has already crossed over from death to life.\u201d In other words, the gift of eternal life is an accomplished reality (though it is only experienced as we truly surrender to the love and grace of God from a heart of faith). The \u201cbasis\u201d of life is now radically new and of a different order. As the apostle Paul later summarized: \u201cFor it is by grace you have been saved (i.e., a perfect passive participle that denotes completed action done on your behalf with effects that continue to the present) through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast\u201d (Eph. 2:9-10). I\u2019m so glad it\u2019s not the strength of my grip that keeps me holding on to God, but the strength of His&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I\u2019m so glad it\u2019s not the strength of my grip that keeps me holding on to God, but the strength of His&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So \u201cbe strong and of good courage\u201d \u2013 chazak ve\u2019ematz! The Lord our God promises \u201cnever to leave you nor forsake you\u201d and to be with you wherever you go (see Josh. 1:5,9; Heb. 13:5, Psalm 139; Matt. 28:20). In the Greek New Testament, the wording of Hebrews 13:5 is highly emphatic: \u039f\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f75 \u03c3\u03b5 \u1f00\u03bd\u1ff6, \u03bf\u1f50\u03b4\u1fbd \u03bf\u1f50 \u03bc\u1f75 \u03c3\u03b5 \u1f10\u03b3\u03ba\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u03bb\u03b5\u1f77\u03c0\u03c9: \u201cNot ever will I give up on you; no, not ever will I leave you behind.\u201d May you hear the voice of the Good Shepherd calling you, and may He forever keep you under His watchful care.
