Hebrew Word of the Week
Based on the Weekly Torah Portion
The Hebrew word of the week is mattot ("tribes"), the plural form of the Hebrew word for a staff (matteh). The word appears in Parashat Mattot, in Numbers 30:2:
Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the people of Israel, saying, "This is what the LORD has commanded. (Num 30:1[2h])
The word mattot derives from the root natah, a verb which means to stretch out or to extend, as Moses stretched forth his hand with the staff of God.
And Moses took the staff of God in his hand. (Exo 4:20b)
The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter.Rule in the midst of your enemies! (Psalm 110:2)
