The Hebrew word of the week is mattot ("tribes"), the plural form of the Hebrew word for a staff (matteh). The word appears in Parashat Mattot, in Numbers 30:2:

Numbers 30:2 (BHS)

Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the people of Israel,
saying, "This is what the LORD has commanded. (Num 30:1[2h])

The word mattot derives from the root natah, a verb which means to stretch out or to extend, as Moses stretched forth his hand with the staff of God.
